Allison Transmission was founded in 1915 under the name Speedway Team Company by Jim Allison. When the business first began, they made transmissions for race cars. When WW1 began in 1917; they had ceased all activities associated with race cars and focused their efforts on providing automotive engineering expertise towards the United States’ war effort. In 1917, Jim Allison renamed the company to Allison Transmission. Jim Allison believed that quality and workmanship were the foundation of a successful business and had a sign up in the original shop that stated: “Whatever leaves this shop over my name must be of the finest work possible.”
